Frequently Asked Questions

After a car accident: A quick-reference list

  1. Stop the car. Pull over safely and turn on your hazard lights. If anyone is injured or the road is blocked, call emergency services immediately by dialing 999.
  2. Check for injuries. Assess yourself and your passengers for any injuries. Even if you feel okay, some injuries (like whiplash) might not appear right away, so it's wise to see a doctor later.
  3. Exchange details. Get the name, address, and contact number from all other drivers and any witnesses. Also, get their insurance information and the registration number, make, and model of their vehicles.
  4. Do not admit fault. Avoid apologizing or accepting blame at the scene. The insurance companies will determine who was at fault based on the evidence.
  5. Document the scene. Take pictures and videos with your phone of the vehicle damage, license plates, the overall scene, and any road conditions or traffic signs. Take notes on the time, date, and location.
  6. Report the accident. If you couldn't exchange details with another driver or if anyone was injured, you must report the accident to the police within 24 hours.
  7. Contact your insurer. Inform your insurance company as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours, even if you don't plan to make a claim. Failing to do so could invalidate your policy.
